My Story into a World of Fresh Food
Food to me, at first, began as a picky little kid who only ate Macaroni and Cheese, Hot Dogs, and, Grilled Cheese while watching my favorite shows on nickelodeon, unaware of anything I ate as long as it tasted good. I figured that if my mom made the meal for me then the meal therefore would be good for my body. As I grew up I became familiar with not only how tasty certain foods were but also if they had any nutritional benefit. I would not necessarily say I am from a family that is huge on having only fresh food, I do indulge in a hearty Big Mac every now and then or a big bundle of buffalo wings but, there has to be a dividing line where I have to know what is nutritionally good and what is not. We balanced the scales of food with various meals both healthy and non healthy but that was about to change.
The story began at my grandmother's house when I was about 11 years old. My brother Brandon and I were picking peaches off the peach tree to make peach jelly for toast. My grandmother told us, "Why bother with going to Walmart when all the elements are right in your backyard to make a successful and more importantly, fresher garden." I had what I would call my own epiphany on food. I began being very choosy on what I could eat every day rather than just popping the Swiss cake rolls and candy down (even though I had a major sweet tooth) on a daily basis. I would spend many weekends at my grandmothers house due to the fact that I knew what she grew and what the farmers had in terms of food locally around her area. So we would go to a farmers market or a grocery store that takes produce from local farmers and we would make our own fresh meals. My mom also contributed to this and began making more healthy meals every day and focusing on getting the nutritional value of each food group. I always appreciated fresh tomatoes, basil, and cilantro on bread with a sprinkle of cheese. This was the simplest meal yet, when the ingredients were fresh, the meal was what I would call magnificent. The more I began eating healthier, fresher food, the more I seemed to feel healthier as an outcome.
You do not always have to be completely healthy and nutritious every day but eating a certain way can help improve many characteristics such as longevity and heart health. One should always be aware of the different types of food and where they come from. It is the ultimate goal of us as a society to choose what we want to eat. So whether your story may start from a peach tree or a backyard garden, there are always ways to eating toward a plentiful lifestyle when it comes down to food.
